Identify the product before comparing the rate
A useful steel quotation starts with the material being offered. Check the product family, manufacturer preference, grade, size and supplied form against your enquiry. A number labelled steel price can describe very different products.
For TMT bars, keep the diameter-wise quantities visible. For structurals, retain the full section designation and length. For wire rods or rounds, make the grade and supply condition clear. An unclear product line can make two apparently similar quotes impossible to compare.
Put every rate on the same unit basis
Check whether the price is per kilogram, per metric tonne, per piece or per supplied length. One metric tonne equals 1,000 kilograms. A conversion only makes sense when the product and quantity basis also match.
Ask whether the invoice quantity will be determined by actual weighing, a nominal section reference or another agreed basis. If the offer is in pieces, the specified length and quantity must be clear. Keep the conversion with the comparison record.
Separate tax, freight and unloading
A headline product rate may exclude GST, transportation, loading or unloading. Ask the seller to identify the included scope and any separate charges. Use the same delivery destination when requesting competing quotes.
Include site-access restrictions, unloading arrangements and the required receiving schedule. The lowest ex-dispatch-point rate is not necessarily the lowest total for the same delivered requirement. An itemised written offer makes these differences visible.
Confirm validity and the next commercial step
Request the quotation date, validity period, availability position and proposed dispatch timing. A quote is an offer with its own conditions, not a permanent public market rate. Clarify whether a price is firm for the stated scope or subject to a later confirmation.
Before committing to an order or payment, verify the seller identity and the final written terms. Keep the requirement, quotation and accepted changes together so the commercial record reflects what both sides have actually agreed.
