Begin with a recognisable section description

Angles, channels and beams are different structural steel section families. Their names identify a general shape, but the purchase enquiry needs enough dimensional information to identify the requested section.

Use the full designation from the approved project material schedule. A broad label such as MS channel or steel beam can leave several possible sections open. A small difference in notation may change which product is being discussed.

Record dimensions and reference information

For an angle, include the required leg dimensions and thickness. For a channel or beam, retain the full section designation and any dimensional information in the purchase specification. Identify the reference standard where the project requires it.

Do not treat a product illustration as a dimensioned drawing or infer a section from a photograph. Use the written schedule and resolve unclear descriptions with the person responsible for the requirement before asking sellers to quote.

Make length, quantity and weight basis clear

List the supplied length and quantity for every section. Mark whether the enquiry is in pieces or metric tonnes. If a reference section mass is used for an estimate, record that basis and the source of the table.

Ask how the final invoice quantity will be determined. A quote based on theoretical mass may not be directly comparable with a quote based on another measurement arrangement unless those terms are made explicit.

Compare documents and delivered scope

Confirm the grade, section identification and required test documents. Include the destination, access conditions and unloading arrangements in the original enquiry so a delivered quotation covers the intended scope.

The section required for a structure is established by its approved design and purchase specification. This guide helps organise a commercial enquiry and compare written offers for that requirement.
